Diabetes Drugs Could Lead To Swelling

POSTED: 6:04 pm EST January 5, 2006

Some problems have been reported by people using two popular diabetes drugs.

The Food and Drug Administration and the maker of the drugs said patients have reported blurry vision and swelling of the legs and feet.

The drugs are Avandia and Avandamet, made by GlaxoSmithKline, which are used to treat type 2 diabetes. The company said it's received "very rare" reports of new or worsening vision problems in diabetic patients who have taken the drug.

It said most of those patients also reported the swelling of the legs, ankles and feet.

The company has notified health care professionals about the reports. It estimates that 5.3 million people worldwide take Avandia and 769,000 people take Avandamet.
