Guardrails Installed On Florida Turnpike

POSTED: 2:53 pm EST February 4, 2005

New guardrails are going up along the medians on a stretch of the Florida Turnpike, but some people are wondering whether guardrails also are needed elsewhere along the road.

Last summer, after three people died when a church bus plunged into a canal south of the Glades Road interchange in Boca Raton, many people expressed concern that guardrails were not in place in the area.

After the crash, officials conducted a statewide study of the turnpike's 449 miles. It concluded that only a 2.5-mile stretch south of Glades needed a new guardrail because the water was within 60 feet of the edge of the road

"This is a standard that applies not only to turnpike but all limited-access roads throughout the state. At this point we are meeting the standard," Florida Turnpike representative Sonyha Rodriguez-Miller said.

Last year, there were 69 canal crashes along the Florida turnpike. Seven people died.
