Ventilation System Blamed For Students' Sicknesses

Parents Demand Answers

Angry parents protested outside a Port St. Lucie School on Wednesday, saying the air quality in the school is so poor, their kids are coming home with nose bleeds and sinus infections.

After mold from the hurricanes settled in Mariposa Elementary's air ducts, crews cleaned them up while school was out in October. Recently, though, they did a deep-cleaning of the entire air-conditioning system, and that's when the problems started.

Taylor Sauer is a kindergartener at Mariposa who has been in the hospital for pneumonia this year. Sauer's mother said Taylor never gets sick, and is concerned the illness was caused by her attending Mariposa.

"It's scary when you hear about other kids who are sick and teachers who are fainting," one parent said.

"My lungs were burning, my eyes were burning," said teacher Laura Wolff. "I was blurred, and I was dizzy. It was awful."

Wolff collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

"The doctor diagnosed it as exposure to chemicals," said Wolff.

Superintendent Michael Lannon said crews spent the weekend cleaning the school and 24 samples were sent out for analysis.

"We've asked testing labs to be able to tell us what is in the air debris, the dust, and fibers that may have been inside filters on that system," said Lannon.

The district hopes to have results from the lab samples back by Sunday. They're also taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again. They plan on hiring a director for indoor air quality.
