WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Palm Beach County students returned to school Monday, after being off for two weeks after Hurricane Wilma.A lot of children have enjoyed their two-week hiatus, staying up later than usual and playing with friends. But many also know they will have to pay for that time off."We have to make it up, and it's going to stink," said Sydney Arroyo, 12, an Independence Middle School student.
After two weeks off, Sydney's mom, Jill, hopes to get her kids back into their routine."The first week was kind of fun -- a break from sports, running around," Jill Arroyo said. "The second week, it was a little trying.""My mom's, like, 'I can't stand this anymore. I have to get back to work.' My dad's, like, 'You're enjoying this a little too much," Sydney Arroyo said. The school district has had its hands full getting all the buildings up and running after the hurricane. Last year, storm repairs cost the school district nearly $30 million. The early estimates from Wilma are nearly $40 million.PBC students, who missed 10 days of school after Wilma, were supposed to have Veterans Day off, but the district has made it the first make-up day, and classes will be held. The second make-up day is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The Palm Beach County School District is working to get a waiver from the state so students will not have to make up all 10 days.
